Applicants with at least 3 years of experience in patent prosecution are preferred, with aptitude for portfolio development and client counseling a plus. Applicant must have a USPTO Reg. No. and possess a degree in Physics, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field. Applicant must be detail oriented and have strong written and verbal skills. Transcripts and patent prosecution writing samples will be requested. 

Prefer candidates with Ph.D or Master’s degree in physics with emphasis on optics.

The Walnut Creek office of Kilpatrick Townsend is seeking a full-time, entry-level Patent Engineer. The successful candidate will be a recent graduate or scheduled to graduate in 2019 with a degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or Physics. Other degrees will be considered if the candidate has taken a reasonable number of programming courses and had obtained good grades in them. A minimum GPA of 3.0 and excellent oral and written communication skills are required. A strong mathematics background is highly desirable.

A Patent Engineer is a professional that will help prepare patent applications and responses to Office Actions from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. Patent engineers work towards certification as Patent Agents that are licensed to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. Starting salaries are competitive with other industries.
